Alaska is Expansive (Seward, AK)

If you thought NY prices (specifically Manhattan) were high, wait until you see Seward, Alaska.  Diesel is $4.64 a gallon.  Good thing we had the extra fuel tank installed.  I filled up in Soldotna on the way to Seward, it was still $4.39/gal.   Why is it that a state that produces so much oil, has such high fuel prices??  If you thought that living in Manhattan was expensive, try Alaska.

We do not eat out a lot, so we wanted to have a dinner out at least once in Alaska. We wanted Halibut.  It seems the average price for a dinner entrée is $33.  So we decided to have a smaller portion for lunch and share.  I got the Halibut basket and Ann got the seafood chowder and salad.  We each shared.  The bill for lunch still came to over $50 with the tip.

Enough of the whining.  We left Homer, traveled back up the Kenai Peninsula to the junction of Alaska 1 and Alaska 9.  Headed south to Seward, one of the cruise ship stops.  Before leaving for Alaska we purchased a Tour Saver Book for $99.  Best purchase we made.  We have more than double our money back.

We booked a 7 hour wild life cruise, and for a modest $40 you can include lunch.  When we went to check in, they told us that ship goes out into the ocean and the captain said that they were cutting that part because of rough seas.  We could transfer to the 5 hour cruise which also includes a meal and they would refund the difference.  So that is what we did.  Which turned out to be the best thing.  The cruise was great, but by the end of the 5 hours, it was enough.  There was a National Park Ranger on board to explain all of the wild life,

Here I am, ready to go on the Kenai Fjords cruise.  Three layers of clothes plus the rain coat.  Also two cameras, one with the standard zoom and one with the telephoto zoom.

And here is Ann with the same three layers and the rain coat.

If you really want to be bored, I have many more pictures I can upload.

Today we went to the Alaska SeaLife Center.  It was built with money from the Exon Valdez settlement.  It is an excellent place to visit.  It is extremely well done with displays and tanks you can really enjoy.

Tomorrow we head back to Anchorage for a day of rest, then back to Talkeetna to take a flight over Denali and Mt. McKinley.  Then on to Palmer and Valdez.

Life is good on the Roan Road..
