Doing the Museum Thing (Anchorage, AK)

We went down the Parks Highway passing through Denali State Park.  We were told that the State Park had better views of Mt. McKinley than the National Park.  It was still a no show.

Coming down the Parks Highway I had to jamb on the breaks barely missing a Bull Moose as it ran across the highway.

Around here the mountain is know by it’s native name, Mt, Denali.  The local and state governments have both adapted the Denali name but one Senator from Ohio has blocked the US government name change for years.  This year they expect it to pass.  We will see with the Do Nothing Congress.

We passed through Wasilla, which is a large town as far as Alaska is concerned.  I climbed up on top of the RV but still could not see Russia, even on my tippy toes.

We stayed at the Golden Nugget RV Park.  We visited 3 museums in Anchorage.  First the Anchorage Museum.  It is part of the Smithsonian Museum.  A beautiful museum and very well done.  We followed a Docent who explained the various native cultures and how they are all connected.

Next museum is the Aviation Heritage Museum.  Aviation played a very big, and still does, roll in the building of Alaska.  Without the Bush pilots Alaska would not be what it is today.  During the summer they use floats for water and large tundra tires. In the winter they trade them in for skis.

Last but not least is the Alaskan Heritage Museum.  It is a museum of the Indigenous people of Alaska and how the lived.  Basically, they were same.  They lived in communal homes that were mostly under ground.  This gave them protection from predators and the weather.  We had a guided tour of the grounds which had examples of the dwellings of the times.

Right now we are Wally Docking. That is, we are parked in a Wal-Mart paring lot.

Next the Kenai Peninsula.

Live is good on the Roan Road….
